Vocal cord polyps are small growths that develop in the mucous membrane that covers the vocal folds. As they grow, they take on a rounded shape. They may remain localized in one area, or spread along the entire length of a fold. Vocal cord polyps can develop over time, due to chronic irritations, such as smoking, acid reflux, indigestion, or vocal abuse. Treatment for polyps can include medical, surgical, or behavioral intervention. In most cases, vocal polyps are benign in nature. However, chronic hoarseness can be a symptom, of a more serious laryngeal condition, such as cancer, and should be evaluated by your doctor.
