This case is being shared because it has many lessons. Lesson for ENT Surgeon is that we must always make sure that the problem is thoroughly addressed. There are times where the diseased sinus cells are very close to the skull base with only 1mm thick bone separating the diseased cell from the brain. These are the cells that are usually not eradicated by an inexperienced ENT surgeon for fear of penetrating the skull base separating nasal cavity from brain.
There are no lessons for the patient – she trusted the surgeon and the surgery was warranted but unfortunately not well done and therefore the problem was not solved. Even if she had gone for a second opinion I would have told her that the surgery was warranted. The second surgeon she went to after the surgery should not have told her nothing can be done but referred her to someone that could have easily fixed her problem
Now the story – she had problems of nasal block and post-nasal drip for years and went to the biggest private hospital in PJ where she had sinus surgery done in 2017. She claims to have a protracted recovery period of up to six months but even after that she still had post nasal drip but no more nasal block. After enduring it for two years she went to see another ENT at another hospital in PJ and after examination and CT Scan (which will be shown in the video) she was told that she will need to live with it. She did that but in June 2021 she finally could not take it and came to see me and when I told her that her problem can be fixed once and for all, she did not believe me as first surgery failed and another ENT said nothing can be done and also memory of a protracted six month recovery after surgery which is very unusual as usually the down time is only 5-10 days after which it is regular follow-up at close intervals first 2-3 months and then every 6 months.
