A nose job (technically called a rhinoplasty) is surgery on the nose to enhance facial harmony and the proportion of the nose in relation to the face. It is also done to improve the impaired breathing of the nose.
It can be done for medical reasons like correcting breathing problems related to the nose or to correct disfigurement resulting from trauma or birth defects.
It can also be done for cosmetic reasons, which will change the nose’s shape and appearance by improving nose size in relation to face size , nose width , nose profile, nasal tip , nostrils and nasal asymmetry.
The patient must never forget that everyone’s face is asymmetric to some extent and our aim is to create facial balance and correct proportions.
Should you get a nose job?
There are many things that need to be considered before you set up an appointment with the surgeon:
- Why do I want to do a nose job – it should be done because you want it and not because someone said that you should have your nose fixed in a particular way.
- What do I want to be corrected or improved with regards to breathing and appearance
- Are my expectations for improvements of my nose realistic and do I have a positive outlook
- Is my facial growth complete and it is not advisable to do it if you have not turned 17
- Am I physically healthy

What happens during a rhinoplasty?
The nose is composed of cartilage, soft tissue and small bones, all of which work together to create the shape and appearance of your nose. The most minor of change to any one of these components can significantly alter the appearance of your nose, which is why rhinoplasty is considered the most difficult plastic surgery as it is an intricate, complicated procedure.
During rhinoplasty surgery, the surgeon operates on these individual parts, using a range of techniques to subtlely refashion the nose both aesthetically and functionally. The techniques used for your rhinoplasty will depend on what you desire and is achievable while taking into account your other facial features. It is also to a certain extent affected by any previous trauma or surgery that might have occurred there.
Post rhinoplasty recovery period
It is quite common for the surgeon to place a silicon splint inside your nose and always a splint and/or small bandages on the outside to protect the new structures during the healing.
The initial swelling takes a few weeks to subside and it may take up to a year for the new nasal shape to be appreciated. During this period of recovery, there will be subtle and gradual changes in the appearance of your nose as it slowly heals to its final shape and appearance.
There could be swelling on and off which may be worse in the morning during the first year following the rhinoplasty surgery.
Is rhinoplasty covered by insurance in Malaysia
When there is another procedure done to correct the breathing which is correcting the deviated nasal septum ie septoplasty , it is considered reconstructive and may be covered by insurance. This procedure is called septo-rhinoplasty when the septum is extending sidewards or downwards causing not only blockage but also a deformity. A pure rhinoplasty in which the septum is not disturbed and only the external part of the nose is corrected for cosmetic reasons is not covered by insurance anywhere in the world unless it is the result of an accident or injury.
